(also known as Vincent, John Vincent Dacey or John Dacy)
Service Number: 19798
16th Bn. Cheshire Regiment
Died of Wounds 28th April 1916, aged 33
Son of Mrs A Dacey, 79 Waterbarn Street, Burnley
From the Express & Advertiser 6th May 1916: FOR HIS COMRADE. Burnley Man's Brave Sacrifice
Mrs. Dacey, of 79 Waterbarn Street, Burnley, has received authoritative information of the death of her son Pte. Vincent J. Dacey (19798) of the Cheshire Regt. Writing on April 28th, the lieutenant commanding his platoon said: - "It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son 16/19798 Pte. V. J. Dacey. He was wounded about 5 p.m. yesterday, the 27th inst., and died in hospital this morning. It will no doubt be a great consolation to you to know that he died like an Englishman and a hero. He was helping to carry one of his wounded comrades when he was hit by shrapnel, with fatal consequences. It seems to me particularly sad, as he had only joined the battalion such a short time previously, and this was the first time in the trenches. He was a geat favourite with his comrades, and will be greatly missed by everyone in the platoon".
Pte. Dacey would have been 34 years of age in August next, and before enlisting worked at Messrs. Pemberton's Foundry. He was connected with St. John's Catholic Church, Ivy Street.
Buried in Merville Communal Cemetery, France: Grave Ref: VI. P. 25.
(The CWGC has his name as J Dacy not V. J. or John Vincent Dacey)
