Private Martin Durkin
10184 2nd East Lancashire Regiment.
Died of Wounds 17th March 1915 at Rawal Pindi Hosp Boulogne, aged 23.
Martin was born in the Sept quarter of 1892 in Burnley, the son of Martin Durkin and Jane Conley.
From the Express and Advertiser dated 27th March 1917: THE DEATH ROLL. BURNLEY MOTHERS GRIEF. SECOND SON KILLED. TWO OF FOUR BROTHERS.
Of the four fighting sons of Mrs Durkin, of 14 Hatter St, Burnley, two have been killed, news of the second, Pte Martin Durkin (10184) of the east Lancashire having been received from Preston this week.
When the war commenced, Pte Durkin was serving in Africa with his Regt., where he had been six years. Twenty three years of age, the message from Preston says he died of wounds March 17th in Rawal Pindi Hospital, Boulogne. The dead soldier was a member of his regimental football team “E” Coy when they won the cup in the 1911 season.
Pte Thomas Durkin, a third brother also of the East Lancashire regiment, has been wounded and has been sent out to the front again, whilst the fourth brother, who went through the Boer War, re-enlisted some time ago, and is in Kitchener’s Army.
Martin left his effects to his mother Jane.
Martin was buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France: Grave Ref; I.E.6A.
