James was born in the Dec quarter 1883, Rochdale. The son of Alexander Gillespie and Ann Bragg. In the 1891 census the family lived at 4 Boot St, Burnley. Alexander 43, tailor born in Londonderry, Ireland, Ann 40, Mary 21 tailoress, Peter 19 tailor all born in Burnley, Lizzie 17 weaver, all born in Rochdale, Annie 12, James 10(?), John 8, and Alice 5 both born in Burnley.
James married Mary Ann Bullock in the Sept quarter 1907, Burnley.
In the 1911 census James 30, furnace labourer, Mary Ann 29, Alexander 3, James 2, Henry 1, his father Alexander 67 and a widower and his brother John 26. Living at 50 Peter St, Burnley.
Lived at 8 Peter Street.
James left his effects to his widow Mary Ann.
