Harry was born in the March quarter of 1896, Burnley. The son of Peter Haney and Mary Jane McCabe. In the 1901 census the family lived at 19 Hull St Burnley. Peter 47 tailor from Bolton, Mary Jane 41 born in Stockton on Tees, Mary Hannah Brown 23 weaver, Peter 11, James 10, Thomas 9, John 7 all born in Middlesbrough Yorks., Martha 6, Henry 5, Joseph 3, Nora 2 and mary Jane 6 months.

By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to 40 Ashworth St, Burnley. Mary Jane now a widow aged 51, Thomas 19, John 17,, Martha 16, Henry 15, Joseph 13, Norah 12, Mary Jane 10 and a boarder Joseph Banks.

Harry enlisted on the 8th July 1916 and left Folkestone for France on the 16th Feb 1917. He was posted missing on the 19th May and taken prisoner. He died a POW between the 19th and 21st May 1917.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 15th Dec 1917: DIED A PRISONER. - SECOND SON OUT OF 7 .

The news of another Burnley soldier who has died a prisoner of war in the hands of the Germans has been received this week's, the unfortunate man being private Harry Haney, 32497, of the Border Regiment, and whose mother resides at 9 Clarence Street Burnley.  He was reported missing on May 19th last but was taken prisoner. The date of his death in a  German Prisoner of war camp is not given. Private Haney who was single and age 21 went out in February last and formerly was a yard-man at Bank Top goods department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company.  A member of the Burnley lads' club he was also connected with St Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He was one of Seven Brothers serving. one, John, was killed at the Dardanelles on August 10th 1915. Thomas has been discharged. The others serving now are Michael, Peter, James and Joseph.

 

Harry left his effects to his mother Mary Jane.

Harry lived at 9 Clarence St., Burnley.

Harry is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France: Bay 6.
