Corporal John Irving

11638 6th East Lancashire Regiment.

Died of Wounds 1st June 1916, aged 28.

John was born in the Sept quarter of 1887 in Burnley, the son of James Irving and Ellen Kerrigan, the GRO have his name spelt Irvine. In the 1891 census the family were living at 55 Bridge St, Burnley. James 34 miner, Ellen 32 weaver, Charles 14 miner all born in Wigan. Catherine 12 milliner, John 4 and Jane 2 all born in Burnley.
Lived at 27 Bradley Street.

The family had moved to 6 Burton St, Burnley by the time of the 1901 census. John had lost his mother and his father James had remarried Margaret Hirst. James 42, Margaret 30, Robert Hirst 18, John Irving 14, John Hirst 6.

In the June quarter of 1906 John married Edith Pickles in Burnley.

In the 1911 census their young family were living at 28 Exmouth St, Burnley. John 23,miner, Edith 25 weaver and Lilly 3.

John left his effects to his widow Edith.

John is buried in the Amara War Cemetery, Iraq: Grave Ref; VII.F.12.
