Herbert was born in the June quarter of 1896 in Burnley. The son of Patrick McCarrick and Jane Bowen.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 83 Raglan St, Burnley. Jane widow, 54 born in Ireland, Mary Ann 30 weaver, James 32 army pensioner, John 28 labourer and Herbert 15 weaver. All the children were born in Burnley. Jane had 7 children altogether and 3 had previously died.

From the Burnley Express dated 1st February 1919: Killed Last March.

Among the many Burnley lads who fell in action in March last was Private Herbert McCarrick, 40103, of the 11th East Lancashire Regiment, who resided with his parents at 83 Raglan Road Burnley.  The official intimation gives the date of death as March 22nd and it is a pathetic feature of his death that he had been at home on leave up to 4 days before.  For some time previous to enlisting he worked on the Burnley Corporation Tramways as a conductor. He was connected with St Mary Magdalene's church, and was in the boys Brigade. He had been in France about a year when killed. His brother Private John McCarrick is serving with the East Lancashire Regiment and has been wounded.

Lived at 83 Raglan Road.

Herbert left his effects to his mother Jane.

Herbert is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France: Bay 5. Son of Patrick and Jane McCarrick.
