Private Hugh James Sullivan.

5077 1st East Lancashire Regiment.

Killed in Action 1st July 1916. Aged 23.

Hugh was born in the March quarter of 1893 in Burnley. The son of James  Sullivan and Ellen Foster.  In the 1901 census the family lived at 29 Leyland Rd, Burnley. James 46 miner born in Crook, Durham,  Ellen 44 weaver born in Hindley, Lancs. Ann 21 weaver, Mary Ellen 16, weaver, Eliza 14 weaver, Daniel 10, Hugh 8 and Kathleen 2. All the children were born in Burnley.

In the 1911 census we find the family had moved to 30 Jury St, Burnley. James 50, Ellen 50, Hugh 18 miner, Katie 13. His parents had been married 30 years and had 12 children, 6 of whom had died.

 

From The Express and Advertiser dated 26th August 1916: BRIERFIELD SOLDIER'S DEATH.

Private Daniel Sullivan of 6 Clough Street Brierfield, of the Welsh Regiment, who was killed in action on July 11 by a sniper, leaves a wife and two children. He was 26 years of age, enlisted in November 1914 and had been in France about 7 months. Before the war he was employed at Barden Pit.

Private H Sullivan a brother of the deceased soldier, has been reported missing since July 1st.

Possibly lived at 1 Park Lane.

Hugh left his effects to his mother Ellen.

Hugh was buried in Redan Ridge Cemetery No. 2, France: Grave Ref; A 12.
