Private Joseph Anderson

Joseph died 16th January 1920, aged 25, he was born in Burnley, the son of George and Mary Agnes Anderson. In the 1901 census they were living at 34 Water St, Worsthorne. Joseph had two sisters Elizabeth (1886) and Jane (1887). In the 1911 census the whole family had moved to 66 Mitella St, Burnley. Joseph’s occupation was that of a warehouseman.

On the 10 May 1915 Joseph, living back at 34 Water St., joined the East Lancs Regiment, service No. 20646. But after 16 days was discharged as being medically unfit.

On the 17th July 1917 he enlisted for the 20th Company of the R.A.M.C. He was then 22 years old. Joseph was discharged on medical grounds on the 4th March 1918. In the April of 1918 his mother wrote to the War Office to try and claim a Silver War Badge for Joseph. Joseph himself wrote again in the Nov of the same year requesting the Badge. He did eventually receive his Silver War Badge.

Joseph was buried in St John’s Churchyard, Worsthorne, Lancashire.
