6880 2nd Manchester Regiment.

Missing in Action 29th October 1914, aged 29.

 

John Bradley 

 

John was born in the Dec quarter of 1884, the son of William Bradley and Kate Dyer. In the 1891 census the family was living at 2 George St, Burnley. Wm 27 born in Burnley, Catherine 35 both weavers, she was born in Wigan, James W 10, Thomas 9, John 6, Edward 3, Elizabeth 2, Mary Dyer 47, Ellen Dyer 12, Agnes 10, Mary 6. All living in 3 rooms!

The family were still on George St in the 1901 census but No 26. John 46, Catherine 38, Thomas 18, John 16, Edward 13, Elizabeth 12, Alfred 9 Daniel 6, Mary 3, Joseph 1.

John (26) and Alfred (20) were living with their Aunt, Margaret Dyer in the 1991 census at 22 Lancaster St, Burnley.

A fine contribution to the British fighting forces has been made by the Bradley family, of 113 Sandygate Burnley, no fewer than five son's having joined the army. One has already laid down his life, and 2 others have been wounded. Private John Bradley, who was in the Manchester Regiment, was reported missing for 17 months, but just three weeks ago official notification was received of his death in action. Gunner Alfred Bradley, who was in the RGA has been ordered once and has also suffered from shell shock. Private Daniel Bradley first join the navy, but afterwards transferred to the army, joining the Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was sent out to the Dardanelles, and was disabled by wounds received on August 9th having been discharged from the army certified as unfit for further service. Private James William Bradley is in the East Lancashire Regiment, and had the experience of being trapped in the barbed wire entanglement while in an attack on German trenches. He went through the Boer War, for which he holds the King and Queens medals, and he has also a medal for life saving in South Africa. Private Edward Bradley is in a battalion of the Manchester Regiment and expects to be on Active Service soon.

Lived at 113 Sandygate Son of the late William and Kathleen Bradley.

John left his effects to the following – Brothers, Thomas, Daniel, Edward, Alfred, sisters, Elizabeth Ruth, Nancy M Bradley.

John is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France: Panels 34 & 35.
