Killed in Action 1st July 1916, aged 20.
James was born about 1895 in Burnley, the son of Samuel and Eliza Clarke. In the 1901 census the family lived at 53 Bridge St, Burnley. Samuel 50 born in Stockport and was a miner, Eliza 40, cotton spinner, Mary 17, Margaret 14, Sarah 9, James 6, Thomas 1, Mary Larkin 21 and Katie Larkin 15, both nieces and all born in Burnley.
By the time of the 1911 census his father Sam had died and his mother had remarried John Haworth and they were living at 38 Bridge St, Burnley. John 60 gas worker, Eliza 50, Mary Clarke 27, Sarah Clarke 18, James Clarke 15, and 6 boarders. John and Eliza had been married 3 years.
James left his effects to his Mother, Mrs. Eliza Haworth.
Lived at 10 Roper Street.
James is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France: M.R.21. Part IX.
