Denis was born in the Sept quarter of 1896 in Burnley, the son of Thomas Coupe and Jane Gibbon. In the 1901 census the family lived at 31 Ivy St., Burnley. Thomas 36 foundryman was born in Burnley, Jane 32 weaver, was born in Manchester, John 6, Denis 4, Emily 2, Jane 14 and Mary A Gibbon 55 (Jane’s mother). All the children were born in Burnley.
The family had moved to 44 Finsley Gate by the time of the 1911 census, Cornelious (Thomas?) 45, Jane 42, Denis 14, weaver, John 15, Herbert 4, Emily 12, Jane 24. His parents had had 11 children 7 of whom had died and they had been married 24 years.

Unofficial news is to hand of the death in action, on Oct 12th, of Signaller Denis Coupe, 7791, of the Lancashire Fusiliers. The intimation was received on Tues. from two Burnley Comrades namely, Pte. John Skinner and Drummer Greenwood, who state that Denis along with three others were in a shell hole carrying out signalling duties, when a shell burst upon them. The unfortunate soldier was 22 years of age and previous to joining the army was in the employ of Messrs’ Spencer, heald manufacturers, healey Wood, Burnley. He was connected with ST Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and School where he is on the roll of honour. He joined the army on the first week of war, on August 10th 1914 and after a long period of training was drafted out some two years ago, and had participated in much fighting. On one occasion he was wounded. His home was at 30 Anne St., Burnley.
Lived at 30 Anne Street.
Denis left his effects to his mother Jane.
Denis was buried in Montay Neuvilly Road Cemetery, France: Grave Ref; II.C.15
