From the Burnley Express dated 25th November 1914: FROM NEWSPAPER LIST. NO WORD SINCE SEPTEMBER .
The Casualty lists published on Monday included the name of Private John Smith 8654 of Blackburn Street Burnley, of the King's Own Liverpool Regiment, among the killed. Yesterday morning a Burnley Express reporter was informed by private Smiths relatives that this was the first intimation they had had of the matter.The last time they heard from the soldier was on a postcard written in the second week in September. The Casualty list in which his name appears is for the dates October 6th, 15 and 18 .
Private Smith had completed his period with the colours, which included a term in India, and returned to civil life 3 years ago. He was to do three years in the reserve and this term would have been up in the present month. He was unmarried, and lodged with his brother Mr Frederick Smith, at 9 Blackburn Street. Before being called up he had been working for Messrs' Simpson Brothers, Contractors.
From the Burnley Express dated 27th July 1917: PRIVATE JOSEPH FETTIGAN (John’s brother)
Mrs Bradshaw of 29 Cog Street, Burnley, would be grateful to any comrade who could give her any information concerning the fate of her brother Private Joseph Fetigan, 88943, Durham Light Infantry, who is officially reported as missing from May 27th. Private Fetigan is 42 years of age and a time expired soldier, who served through the South African War. At the Outbreak of the present war he was employed as a sinker at Bank Hall Pit Burnley, and at once enrolled in the service of his King and Country. Private John Fetigan of the Liverpool Regiment, brother of the missing soldier, fell at Morssy France, on September 20th 1914 and another brother Private Henry Fetigan of the King's Own, is now serving.
Lived at 11 Castle Street.
John left his effects to his father John and sister Ellen Bradshaw.
