Patrick was born in the March quarter 1890, Burnley. The son of Patrick Gaughan and Sarah Sharp. In the 1891 census the family lived at 29 Moseley St, Burnley. Patrick 35, Sarah 34, Bridget 16 weaver, Catherine 14 weaver, Frank 12, William 8, Tom 6, Henry 3 and Patrick 1. All living in 4 rooms.

In the 1901 Census the family were living at 4 Arundel St Burnley. Patrick 45 Mason’s labourer born in Mayo Ireland, Sarah 44 born in Manchester, Frank 22 Mason’s labourer, Henry Cotton worker, Patrick 11 all sons born in Burnley.
