Acting/Corporal James Holden

10391 2nd East Lancashire Regiment.

Killed in Action 24th September 1915, aged 25.

James was born about 1890 in Burnley, The son of James and Rose Holden. In the 1901 census the family lived at 6 Tales Terrace, Burnley. Rosehannah 49, married born in Bolton, Margaret 18, James 10 and Catherine 13.

James was in South Africa at the time of the 1911 census.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 16th Oct 1915: SUCCESSFUL SWIMMER. - CORPORAL KILLED IN FRANCE.

News has been received at his home 3 Pickup Court Burnley, from the War Office, that Corporal J Holden 10391, of the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment, was killed in action in France on September 24th.  Corporal Holden who was in his 25th year, joined the army about 6 years ago and spent three years in South Africa.  He was in the Machine Gun section and was considered a very efficient gunner. When the Battalion came back from South Africa he had a few days leave and he also had 4 days leave from the front about three or 4 months ago. In his younger days he won a name for himself as a swimmer and in connection with the Burnley St Mary's swimming club won10 medals and the cup.  He was one of the team which won the challenge shield in 1901. Since he went to France he won a prize in some swimming competitions arranged for the Soldiers.

 

Lived at 3 Pickup Court.

James left his effects to his mother and father,  Rose and James.

James was buried in Y Farm Military Cemetery, France: Grave Ref; H.13. Son of James Holden, of 9, Brick St., Burnley.
