Private Peter Kerrigan

22542 5th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Killed in Action 20th July 1918. Aged 21.

Peter was born in Hoyland, Yorkshire about 1897. The son of Michael Kerrigan and Christina Weir.

In the 1911 census the family lived at11 Brunshaw Rd Burnley. Michael 50 a bricklayers labourer, born in Ireland, Christina 49 winder in a cotton mill was born in Dundee, Scotland, Margaret 24 a winder was born in Burnley, Mary 20 weaver, Christina 16 weaver, Peter 14 tub oiler, and Lawrence 11 were all  born in Hoyland.

News has been received that Private Peter Kerrigan, 22542, of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry was killed in action on July 20th. He enlisted in May 1915 and went out 12 months later. After being wounded twice, he returned to the front in May 1917. He was only 21 years of age when he met his death. He was formerly employed at Rowley Pit, and attended St Mary's RC School. He was an old brigade boy at St John's RC Church and also belonged to the Burnley lads' club. His younger brother Private Lawrence Kerrigan, aged 19 is serving in Palestine. Another brother Lance-Corporal W Kerrigan has died in India. Two cousins Private P Henry and Private L Clarke have made the supreme sacrifice and another Private G Clarke has lost a leg in Active Service.

 

Lived at 74 Abel Street.

Peter left his effects to his mother Christina.
