Edward was born 7th Nov 1894 in Burnley. The son of Edward Marshall and Ellen Mansfield. In the 1901 census the family lived at 34 Norton St, Burnley. Edward 30 labourer born in Burnley, Ellen 31 born in Wrexham Wales, Albert 9, Edward 7, William 4 and Mary Jane 2. All born in Burnley.
The family had moved to 82 Leyland Rd by the time of the 1911 census. Edward 38, Ellen 42, Edward 16, William 14, Mary Jane 12, Josephine 8, Veronica4, Kathleen2 and Albert 18. His parents had been married 17 years and had had 9 children 2 of whom had died.

Mr and Mrs Marshall of 82 Leyland Road Burnley, received word last weekend that their son Private E Marshall 9881, of the Cheshire Regiment had been missing from November 20th. No place is given in the official communication. Private Marshall who formerly worked in the brickyard at the Towneley collieries had finished 12-months in the Special Reserve last July. After being at home a month he was called up again but did not go to France until October. His parents received early that month one of the army postcards to state that he was well, but they have not heard from him since. Private Marshall was 20 years of age.

The parents of Private E Marshall 9881, of the Cheshire regiment who live at 82 Leyland Road Burnley, are very anxious to obtain definite news of him. He was reported as missing on November 20th 1914 and no word has been received from him for 14 months. The Record Officer at Shrewsbury has just sent an intimation to the parents that no further official news has yet been received.
