Private Arthur Martin

266121 9th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Taken prisoner 27th May 1918.

Died 4th October 1918. Aged 30.

Arthur was born 7th April 1888 in Burnley, baptised on the 8th Aug. The son of Joseph Martin and Louisa Samuels. In the 1891 census the family were living at 20 Ward St Burnley.  Joseph 36, Louisa 35, Benjamin 17, Martha 13, Joseph 11, Ada 9, Nellie 7, Ida 4, Arthur 2, and Emily 9 months.

In the 1901 census the family were living at 20 Ward St Burnley. Joseph 44 labourer, Louisa 44 both were born in Cornwall, Benjamin 27 labourer, Joseph 21 weaver, Nelly 19 weaver, Ida 14, weaver, Robert8, Arthur 12, John 5 and Florrie their granddaughter 6.

Arthur married Margaret Hannah Chew in the March quarter of 1909 in Burnley.

By the time of the 1911 census Arthur having married Margaret Chew was living with his father in law Fletcher Chew at 48 Oak St Padiham, Lancs. Arthur 22 warehouseman, Margaret 22 weaver, Arthur jnr 3, Ada 1.  There were 15 people living in 6 rooms!

 

From the Burnley Express dated 10th August 1918.

Private Martin (30), 266121, Loyal North Lancashire, son of Mr and Mrs Martin, 20 Ward Street Burnley, has been missing since May 27th. He joined up in July 1916 and went out 18 months later. At home he worked in the warehouse at Keighleys' Trafalgar Street. Mrs Martin and Mrs Rushton 1 Sandhurst Street, will be glad to obtain any information. Private Martin's brother Tom, whose photo appeared in the Express 2 years ago, is presumed to have been killed. Two other brothers are serving.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 22nd March 1919: Died In Germany.

Mrs Agnes Rushton of 20 Hobart Street Burnley, has received notification of the death whilst a prisoner of war in Germany of Lance Corporal Arthur Martin 266121, of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. We published his photo on August 10th 1918 he joined up in July 1916 and went to France the following year. He lost a brother Private Tom Martin East Lancs, about two years ago. Also two brothers-in-law have been sacrificed. Another brother Private Robert Martin is now in France. Deceased formerly worked in the warehouse at Keighleys' Trafalgar Street Mill. His parents address is 20 Ward Street Burnley.


Born in Burnley, formerly lived at 20 Ward Street. Lived in Montreal, Canada.

Arthur left his effects to his widow Margaret.

Arthur was buried in Glageon Communal Cemetery & Extension, France: Grave Ref; II.E.2.
