Private Robert Redman. 

377666 2/10th Manchester Regiment.

Killed in Action 30th July 1917. Aged 33.

Robert was born in Bolton, Lancs. The son of Robert Redman and Jane Alice Rothwell.

In the 1901 census the family lived at 12 Layfield St, Burnley. Robert 48 Slater, Jane 48, John 22, Elizabeth 19, Robert 16 slater, Alfred 14, Ellen 13, and Nellie 11. All the children were born in Bolton.

Robert enlisted in the Oct of 1902 in the Shropshire Light Infantry, 7107, he served on the home front until 1914 when he was mobilised on the 5th Aug. he was posted to the 17th Battalion. He was in France until 1st Dec 1914. He was discharge on the 20th Oct 1915 as a time served soldier but was once again called up and joined the Manchester Regt.

Robert married Maretta Wolfenden at Blackburn Reg. Office on the 28th Oct 1905. Their son Robert was born 16th Aug 1908.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 43 Clegg St East, Burnley. Robert 26 slater, Maretta 29 born in Barrowford, Lancs and Robert junior 2 born in Burnley.

 REDMAN. Killed in action on July 30th Private 366777 Robert Redman, Manchester Regiment aged 33 years.

 

Hearts that have loved him can never forget.

But the hardest part is yet to come.

 From the Burnley News dated 18 August 1917: BURNLEY RESERVIST. OFFICIAL INTIMATION OF DEATH IN ACTION.

Private Robert Redman of the Manchester Regiment whose wife resides at 4 Hillary Street Burnley Lane is officially reported to have been killed in action on July 31st. He was called up as a reservist on the Outbreak of the war, having served 3 years with the colours and 9 years with the reserve. During his last term of service in France his time expired and he re-enlisted. He was formerly employed by Messr's W Schofield and Sons Slaterers, Colne Road Burnley.

Lived at 4 Hilary Street.

Robert left his effects to his widow Maretta.

Robert was buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, France: Grave Ref; III.A.19.
