Died in Holland 14th January 1919, aged 27.

Joseph was born about 1892.

Joseph married Jane Broderick in the June quarter of 1914.

From the Burnley Express & Advertiser dated 1st February 1919: "DIED ON HIS WAY HOME"

The death took place in Holland from pneumonia, on January 14 of Pte. Joseph Riley, 4429, of the 1st East Lancashire Regt., aged 27, whose wife lives at 76, Helena –street; Burnley. The deceased went to camp with the Special Reserve in July 1914, and on the outbreak of war he was at once drafted into the Expeditionary Force, going out on December 30 of the same year. He has never been home since. He was taken prisoner on May 14 1915, and died in Holland whilst on his way home after being released. One of his two brothers has been killed, and the other is still serving. He was formerly employed at Towneley brickyard, and attended St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Both his parents are still living.

Lived at 76 Helena Street.

Joseph left his effects to his widow Jane.

Joseph was buried in Amersfoort R.C. Cemetery, Holland: Grave Ref; 26.24
