Private John McConville (Snr).

(Father of Arthur and John Jnr, who also perished in the war)

Killed in action 8th November 1914. Aged 59.

John was born in Belfast, N Ireland about 1855. He married Hannah Hartley at the age of 22, on the 16th Jan 1876 in Burnley. He was a collier and lived on Robert St. Hannah was 23 and she lived on Back South St, Burnley.

They lived at 14 Butler St, Burnley in the 1881 census. John 29, Hannah 29, Arthur 5, Edward 3, Margarite 1, Agnes 2 and Willie 3 months, all born in Burnley. Also living with them was John's widowed mother, Margarite 70, and sister Catherine 30 both born in Ireland.

The family were still at Butler St by the time of the 1891 census. John 41, Annie 38, Arthur 15 twister, Edward 13 twister, Margaret 11, Agnes Mary 9, Caroline 7, Thomas 5, John 3 and Ellen 1. All living in 2 rooms.

By the time of the 1901 census they had moved to 8 Ardwick St, Burnley. John 45, Ann 48, Mary19, Caroline 17, Thomas 15, Ellen 11, Daniel 9 and Hannah 6.

In the 1911 census, still in Ardwick St, John and Hannah still had 4 children living with them, Thomas 25, Nellie 21, Daniel 19 and Hannah 17. John and Hannah had been married for 36 years and had had 10 children all surviving.

 

John is commemerated at The Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium. Panel 42
