From the Burnley Express dated 31st January 1917: Training for Priesthood. Promising Career cut short.
The Roman Catholic Church has lost a promising young Priest through the death from gunshot wounds in a French Hospital of Pte. (4223) John Mayo, the 25 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Mayo of 6 Peart Street, Burnley. Pte. Mayo was formerly a Weaver at the Britannia Mill, and about four years ago, he left to go into College at Battersea with the intention of becoming a Priest. Under the group scheme he was called to the Army nine months ago and left England shortly after Christmas. He was in the Royal Scots. Regiment and evidently was hit soon after going into the trenches, for his death is officially stated as having taken place on January 23rd. Pte. Mayo, whilst at Burnley, was a good active worker at St John's Church, Ivy Street, and well-known in the Catholic Brotherhood. A Brother is serving in the R. F. A. and another is working on munitions at Barrow.
