From the Burnley Express dated 9th June 1917: FATAL SHELL WOUND
Mrs. Oddie, who resides at 13, Blenheim Street, Burnley, has received official news that her husband, Pte. Ambrose Oddie, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, has died of wounds in the East. Pte. Oddie, who was close on 28 years of age, was wounded by a shell in the neck. He joined the Army on June 3, 1916 and went to the East three months later, since when his wife has not seen him, but she had a letter from him on April 29 saying he was "all right".
Apparently it was the day after that he received the fatal wound, for the official message gives the date as April 30th. There are two brothers of deceased in the Army, and one of them, who is in France, has been wounded twice, and also been down with trench fever.
Deceased worked at his trade as a weaver before joining up and he leaves a widow and one child with whom much sympathy will be felt.
(C.W.G.C. have the death of Pte. Ambrose Oddie recorded as 30th May 1917, not April as indicated in the newspaper article)
Buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Greece: B. 283
