From the Burnley News 7th October 1916: BURNLEY SERGEANT'S DEATH IN THE BALKANS
Sgt. Jack Moran of the Salonika Force, youngest son of Mr. Moran, broker, Colne Road, Burnley, was killed in action on September 14th. He enlisted on September 6th, 1914. Before then he was a tackler at Mr. Proctor's Mill, Stoneyholme. He was 28 years of age, and a single man. He was a regular attender at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Ivy Street. The following letter has been received by his father: - "Salonika Force, Greece 15/9/16. Dear Mr. Moran, -- I am very sorry to have to inform you that your son Jack was killed in action yesterday, rallying the men for a counter-attack. He and his officer, who was killed just about the same time, are spoken of by all left as being two of the bravest fellows they have ever seen. My sympathy goes out to you in your irreparable loss. I have lost the best of chums. -- Yours sincerely, Samuel C. Davies, Acting Quartermaster-Sergeant. Any particulars you may require regarding Jack I will see to, as a duty to a lost pal."
Another son of Mr. Moran's, Sergt. Joseph Moran, is in hospital suffering from trench fever and gas attack. He was a tram driver in the employ of the Burnley Corporation. Two brothers-in-law of the Sergeants are serving in the Army. Staff-Sergt. B. Harrison is in Egypt, and Lance-Corporal Hilton Duxbury is in hospital at Bombay. Both the latter are Burnley men. Two cousins, John and James Moran are also in the Forces.
Commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Greece
