James was born about 1878 in Burnley, the son of Michael and Sarah Jane Doran.
In the 1891 census aged 12 James was living at 14 Malthilen St(?), Burnley with his father Michael 36, born in Ireland and mother Sarah 32 also born in Ireland, brother Michael 7, and sister Margaret 4.
James fought in the Boer War
By the time of the 1901 census James 22 was a cotton weaver and boarding with a Thomas McCabe at 10 Norton St.
In the 1911 census James was boarding with a Mary Robinson of 9 Charles Row, Burnley, aged 31 and now a labourer at a foundry.
James left his effects to his sister Mrs Margaret Beattie and an Ada Butcher. He had also left something to his brother Michael but this was later cancelled.

Council presume the death of Private James Doran, 7827, Lancashire Fusiliers Machine Gun Section, who had been missing since September 14th 1916. He was in the Boer War, and being a reservist when the present war broke out was called up and went out in March 1915. He was at the Dardanelles for 10 months and was wounded there. Before the war he was a foundry man at Pollards, Calder Vale Road. After the Dardanelles he went to another area of hostilities.
He has a brother Michael, in the Scottish rifles and who has been wounded twice. Mrs Beattie lives at 94a Sandygate Burnley.
