John was born about 5 March 1889 in Burnley, the son of William Burke and Mary J Thompson. His father was a Coal Miner from St Helens and his mother was a Burnley girl. He was baptised 24TH April in St Mary’s Church Burnley.
In the 1891 census the family was living with his mother’s mother, Ann Conway at 8 Park St, Burnley. Mary 22, William 23, John P 2, James 2 months.
In the 1901 census at 37 Milton St, Burnley were William 32, Mary 34, John 12, James 10, Margaret 6, Joseph 1 and Ann Conway 65 mother in law.
In the 1911 census John being in the army was recorded at Giford Barracks Warrington, Lancs.
John married Catherine Gainley on the 13th Oct 1915 in St Mary’s Church, Burnley. At the time of their marriage he lived at 11 Blakey St, Burnley and Catherine at 7 Linby St, Burnley.

The death occurred from pneumonia, on 28th Nov, in France, of Cpl. John Burke, of the A.S.C. whose wife lives at 7 Linby St, Burnley. His wife had been with him 3 weeks before he died. He was in the army before the war and went to France on August 14, 1914. He was formerly employed at Lee’s dye Works and attended St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Two of his brothers are serving – one in France and the other went through the Dardanelles fighting.
John was buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France. Grave Ref; IX.A.6B.
