Killed in Action, 5th September 1916, aged 21.
I believe Joseph actually was christened John and he was born in the Sept. quarter, Burnley the son of Joseph Cowley and Martha Ann Calvey. In the 1901 census the family lived at 5 Pink St., Blackburn. Martha 27 cotton winder, born in Darwen, John 6, Maggie 4 and Agnes 3 and Joseph’s mother, Margaret 48.
In the 1911 census the family had moved to 2 Hamlet St, Blackburn, Mary 36 and now a widow, John 16, Margaret 14 and Agnes 13. No mention of years married or no. of children.
Joseph left his effects to his mother Martha Ann.
Joseph was buried in Vermelles British Cemetery: Grave Ref; V.B.7. Son of Mrs. Martha Ann Cowley, of 18, Radcliffe St., Blackburn.
