James was born in Burnley about 1884, the son of John and Bridget O’Brien. In the 1891 census the family lived at 25 Shackleton St, Colne. John 42 shoemaker, Ireland, Bridget 40 both born in Tipperary, Catherine 14, Sarah A 10, Stephen 9, and James 7.

By the 1901 census the family had moved to 16 Moorhead St, Colne. John 53, Bridget 53, Sarah Ann 21, Stephen 20, James 18 a carver of cotton.

James was living with his married sister Catherine Ogden in the 1911 census at 11 Atkinson St, Colne. He was aged 28, single and a cotton weaver, His sister was 34 and married to Edward 36 a loom overlooker and their three children, Joseph, John and Agnes.

James was born in Burnley, lived at 40 Hargreaves Street, Colne.

James left his effects to his sisters, Catherine Ogden and Sarah A Holden and brother Stephen.

James was buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France: Grave Ref; VI.C.26. He is also commemorated on Colne's War Memorial.
